Good news for MT’s – Outsourcing medical transcription increases cost
By: Laura Naumann
Among the articles about in-house medical transcriptionists being systematically eliminated by outsourcing and those announcing another acquisition by a mega million medical transcription agency I found an article worth reading and reporting on, as this is something that could revive the medical transcription profession.
The news comes from Canada where healthcare facilities, much like their American counterparts, are counting on outsourcing medical transcription to save money. With 130 in-house medical transcription jobs at risk Canada’s Hospital Employee’s Union (HEU) investigated those money-saving predictions. The news is good for us, it turns out that outsourcing medical transcription costs more in the long run.
By examining the financial records of facilities that have already outsourced medical transcription HEU found that transcription costs have actually increased 150% over four years. HEU spokesman Bonnie Pearson also pointed out that the outsourced work often requires editing by in-house staff, which of course also increases the bottom line transcription cost.
