Cheryl is right. Editing pays lousy and transcription is a dying field.
I feel so bad for the person who is currently taking a medical transcription course through her community college. I have been an MT for many years and have seen the profession go to hell. Shame on that college for encouraging people to get into such a dead end field.
I’m a new MT and would like to give Janice a little encouragement. It’s true that you won’t make a pile of money as a transcriptionist but it’s still possible to make a little. In my situation, working from home is my only option because I live in a remote area. Even though I don’t make a lot, it evens out because I don’t have spend money on gas for a long commute for a minimum-wage job.
Medical transcription is a job for people who have no other work options. The current per-line pay is usually less than minimum wage for most transcriptionists. However, for people that live in remote areas, it might still be a worthwhile profession.
The problem with medical transcription is that most of the work is being sent offshore where people will work for much less than minimum wage.
I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I’m working for a physician who treats me very well. I don’t work from home but have very flexible hours and the pay is decent.
I had a job like Louise’s until the doctor I worked for switched to voice recognition and hired a service for editing. After many years working for him, he didn’t even offer me severance pay!
Voice recognition has put a lot of MT’s out of work – those working for private practices and large agencies. The only jobs right now are in editing. Sometimes they are so bad that editing means redoing almost the entire report – but the pay is 3 or 4 cents per line.
