I just got notice that the hospital where I work will start sending our transcription out next month and by 3 months plan to entirely eliminiate the transcription staff. The part-time girl got laid off today.

the new company offered all of us jobs but we wouldn’t even be employees just subcontractors and the pay is terrible. I have always been paid by the hour not by the line. Can you tell me what the average per line pay rate?

eleanor – your story illustrates the future of medical transcription. I believe that in-house transcriptionists should start preparing to be otusourced in teh near future. I really do enjoy working from home but find that pay is a concession i must make. I think the going rate for expereinced transcriptionists is 7 to 8 cents per line but if anybody has better information I would like to hear from you.

I saw something on another board about the big transcription agencies micromanaging their staff. The post said that you had to let a supervisor know if you left your desk even for something like a bathroom break and they would dock you for that. Is this true?

It’s the truth. I was happy with the transcription company I worked for until they were taken over by ____. Now I have to account for every minute of the day that I’m supposed to be working. Of coruse there are ways to get around their spying but I still resent it.

I saw that same post about the bathroom breaks. Are these companies really that picky? I just found out our company is being bought out and I worry about the new owners policies.

I got laid off when our hospital closed its transcription department. Transcend took over but I didn’t want to accept the pay so I turned them down their job offer. Now 9 months later I wish I would have taken the job. I have applied everywhere it seems like. Most of the time I don’t get a response. When I do make it through the first round I end up failing the test. I think the tests are unrealistically hard. I don’t think a lot of doctors would pass the multiple choice part and they must have picked the hardest doctors they have for the dictation part. I have a glowing letter of recommendation from the hospital but haven’t gotten a chance to show it to any prospective employers.

Appreciating the persistence you put into your site and in depth information you offer. It’s great to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed material. Excellent read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.

I’ve been a mt for almost 20 years so of course have seen a lot of changes. I worked as an independent contractor for a small agency for 12 years before it was bought out by a bigger one – then again by an even bigger one. I actually appreciate working for the bigger company. I get benefits I never got as an independent contractor such as pto time and insurance. They also take out takes and pay their share so I don’t have to worry about self-employment taxes.
