Work from home as a medical transcriptionist
By Laura Naumann
Type in “work at home” or “work from home” on your Internet search and you will be faced with literally millions of results. There are websites that offer high-paying medical transcription jobs or medical transcription jobs without experience and websites that offer low cost online medical transcription training. While some of these sites are nothing more than scams others are offering legitimate medical transcription career opportunities.
The FTC reports that one well-known work at home scam is medical billing, in which substantial income is promised to process medical claims electronically. These companies typically require a cash outlay for the necessary software, client lists and support to set up your own medical billing company. Often what you receive for the investment is software that doesn’t work, outdated irrelevant client lists and very little in the way of support.
Not to be confused with medical billing is work from home medical transcription. Medical transcription is a REAL work from home job and the need for trained medical transcriptionists is growing. Transcriptionists are not licensed but it is very difficult to find employment without having completed a medical transcription training course.
Medical transcription requires more than typing skill. To perform effectively as a medical transcriptionist one must have a basic understanding of medical terminology, body anatomy, medical procedures, lab tests and pharmacology.
Medical transcription training programs vary from a 2-year AA degree to a certificate of completion from an online course. although a recent news article that I read gives the impression that 2-year programs may be on the way out.
